Social Security Disability benefits and COVID-19

COVID-19 is a frightening illness because no one knows how it will affect them. Some people will go about their business without ever knowing they’ve contracted the illness. For others, it will prove to be fatal. But what about the people who fall into the middle?

Numerous folks have contracted the illness and have effectively recovered. However, they are still suffering from lingering effects caused by the virus. You may find it difficult to catch your breath or are suffering from other limitations that are impacting your ability to return to work. If this is the case, you may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits.

Applying for SSD benefits: The basics

To qualify for SSD benefits, you must:

  • Prove that you can’t perform your job due to a disability
  • Show that you are unable to perform other types of jobs due to a disability
  • Your condition is expected to last for at least 12 months or longer

Because COVID-19 is so new and we know so little about it, simply stating that you tested positive for the virus is unlikely to be enough to recover benefits. However, if the virus has resulted in a chronic underlying condition, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome, then you will have a better chance of receiving the benefits you need.

The application process can be complicated. It’s not uncommon for valid claims to be denied. You should work closely with a skilled legal professional who can help you with the initial application and handle any appeals, if necessary.
