Understanding why many disability claims come back denied

When a West Virginia applicant files for Social Security disability benefits, it is because he or she has a mental or physical condition that prevents him or her from earning a living. When your medical issues keep you from earning enough income to support yourself or enter the workforce at all, you could be eligible for this same support. Unfortunately, even people with valid claims find they are not initially successful.

It may be helpful for you to know that many first-time claims for disability benefits come back denied. It is actually quite common, and while frustrating, it is not the end of the road. You have the right to continue to pursue your benefits through a reconsideration of your claim or an appeal.

What should you do when no is the answer?

When you cannot get the benefits you deserve and to which you have a valid claim, you may feel overwhelmed, confused and unsure of what to do next. One of the first steps you may want to take is to understand why the Social Security Administration denied the claim. This will help you as you continue your pursuit of benefits. Some of the most common reasons for a denied claim include:

  • Records indicate that you earn too much money to qualify for this type of financial support.
  • You did not include any documentation that indicates you have been following a doctor's instructions regarding your medical condition.
  • It is possible that your injuries or medical condition is the result of drug or alcohol use.
  • There is not enough medical documentation to prove that you have a valid disabling condition.
  • Attempts made by the SSA to contact you regarding your case were not successful.
  • You did not follow directions with your claim, give medical records when asked or do other things requested by the SSA.

Once you receive notice of a denied claim, it may be helpful to reach out for help regarding how to move forward from this point.

You do not have to fight alone

The process of securing disability benefits can be long, frustrating and overwhelming. From the initial stages of completing your paperwork to filing an appeal, many applicants find benefit in seeking guidance as they walk through this important process. If you have questions about your denied claim or effort to get financial support, it could be prudent to discuss your concerns with an experienced attorney.
