Psoriatic arthritis and SSD

Many people living in West Virginia have a diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis. This is a condition that can lead to joint inflammation, mobility impairments and other symptoms, such as severe fatigue. While many people are able to effectively manage this condition, others may find that they are unable to continue working.

When a disability impairs a person's ability to work, he or she may be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits. Applying for benefits can be a lengthy process that requires information from a physician as well as the completion of forms that describe the disability as well as the applicant's inability to work.

Those with psoriatic arthritis can be evaluated for and apply for benefits under the classification of "inflammatory arthritis." Those who meet the level of impairment required to be classified with this condition are automatically approved for benefits. Those who are not so impaired may be able to meet the criteria for major joint dysfunction or disorders of the spine.

It should be noted that about 70% of initial applications for SSD are denied by the Social Security Administration. Because of this, applicants should be aware that they will likely have to complete the appeals process. During this process, the applicant will have to show that he or she is disabled, cannot work and cannot be retrained for a different type of work.

Individuals with psoriatic arthritis who are considering applying for Social Security Disability may benefit from speaking with an attorney. The attorney may be able to review the client's case and make recommendations regarding a course of action. An attorney might assist with completing the initial SSD application as well as help during the appeals process.
